Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Terrific twig handled by the best of his era, Gordie Howe, during his final season in the National Hockey League. Howe finished his days as a forward with the Hartford Whalers during their inaugural NHL season in 1979-80. The stick is a Koho 221 model with typical Howe tape job including the two-tone knob tape and blackened white cloth wrap at the blade. As is the case with almost all of Gordie’s gamers from this period, his name and number are marked on in dark black marker on the shaft. As the story goes, trainers were having a hard time keeping Howe sticks out of the hands of souvenir hunters, so his equipment was not identified until it was ready to be used and, according to large marker notations running up from the blade on both sides of the shaft, this one was used in a "March 19/80" game. This example shows good game use with no glaring damage, apart from a very small chip at the toe.
