Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
An amazing hexad of unopened vintage relics is up on the auction block here, with 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee wax packs being the first ones of the 20-cent era and the company’s 396-card set considered a landmark issue due to the inclusion of Wayne Gretzky’s rookie card. With the first-year example of "The Great One" accompanied by the cards of fellow legends Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and Mike Bossy appearing on the condition-sensitive blue border cards, each of the packs being offered shows generic hockey player imagery over the front of its blue and yellow coloured wrappers, along with "HOCKEY" in yellow letters at the top and both the NHL shield logo and original per-pack-purchase price of .20 cents as well. Each containing a total of fourteen (14) cards plus a stick of bubble gum on their interiors, the reverse sides of five (5) out of the six (6) packs display promotional send away offers of a "sports card locker" while the final one displays an offer for a "one year diary with lock and key". All found to be in overall excellent condition, one (1) shows a small tear near the top on the front that is worth noting for accuracy while the others show just the odd small crease/fold. Additionally, all the seals/folds on the reverse sides are found to be nice and tight upon inspection. Unopened pack aficionados will want to seriously consider this wondrous opportunity, with the question for our lucky winning bidder surely being whether or not to bust them open or keep them sealed!
Of note, the packs, despite not being graded or certified, come from the collection/inventory of Jason Martin from Martin Sports Cards, who inspected the packs and believes that they are all legitimate unopened examples. Please be aware that the packs are being sold "AS-IS" and are unable to be returned.
