Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
An opportunity to acquire one of the most important hockey rookie cards is available here, with Wayne Gretzky’s desirable 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee card just back from PSA headquarters where it received an EX 5 assessment. Light wear to the two bottom corners, in the form of white specks, is obvious at first glance, but appealing centering and an immaculate-looking surface are appreciated attributes. The two thin parallel horizontal lines that appear at the base of the cartoon on the back are an indication, in the eyes of some, of a first print run, while other hobbyists dispel that belief. The rest of the set, placed in Ultra Pro Platinum 9-pocket pages, features dozens and dozens of sharp, crisp NM-or-better cards, with the average appearing to be NM or very close to it. We spot some touched corners here and there but, not a single crease, (although pages can sometimes hide subtle flaws). Most of the key big names attain NM or beyond, with all checklists and team checklists unmarked. One checklist (#131) is NM, with the other two EX+ or EX-MT, while the Oilers team logo/checklist has an edge and corner dings, along with surface scratches (VG-EX). Expect other (small amounts) of condition exceptions, with however some high grade material to be discovered far outweighing the lesser lights – you should be pleased upon taking possession of these blue-bordered classics.
