Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Displaying its iconic blue coloured borders and skate design on the reverse, the complete 396-card 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee set is presented here, led by a copy of Wayne Gretzky’s coveted first-year cardboard that has earned a respectable upper tier grade mark of NMM 8 from KSA. Displaying over the front and reverse with pleasing centering, the card retains strong colours and relatively smooth edges on the sides, all four (4) corners show just the lightest touches of wear, appearing heaviest at the two (2) points over the top. With the surfaces appearing to be quite clean still, the card is housed in a KSA holder that shows a couple of light scratches over both sides worth mentioning.
For the other 395-cards, picked from our consignor's stash which included roughly six (6) to twelve (12) of each card in the checklist, the group is found to be in a consistent high-grade range of EX-MT to NM and includes no cards with creases, almost no cards with rough cut edges, no cards with wax stains over their front and most cards with nice centering. Including notable key examples of 40-Salming (EX-MT to NM - tiny dot of white showing on the bottom right corner), 125-Clarke (EX-MT to NM), 131-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked), 150-Dryden (EX-MT to NM - off-center), 175-Howe (EX-MT to NM), 185-Hull (EX-MT to NM - slightly off-center), 200-Lafleur (EX-MT to NM), 220-P. Esposito (EX-MT to NM), 230-Bossy (EX-MT to NM - 2nd year card), 237-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked) and 346-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked), the three (3) new team logo cards and team checklist cards are all unmarked and along with the other star cards, all in a condition consistent with the rest of the set.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
