Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Found in O-Pee-Chee packs that contained 14 cards and that cost kids/collectors 20 cents during the 1979-80 season were blue-bordered cards like these, with that of Wayne Gretzky surely coveted by season’s end as the scrawny teenage whiz kid from Brantford, Ontario proved he could “play with the big boys”…and how! Nobody totaled more points than Wayne and now no other hockey rookie card carries more appeal among the hobby’s masses than iconic #18, offered here after receiving a mark of VG-EX 4 at ACA headquarters. Showing with overall pleasing centering and excellent colours as well as clean surfaces over both sides, the included copy of the iconic rookie card does show wear to the edges and corners that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Still a pleasing copy of “The Great One’s” first year offering, the rookie example is included as part of a partial set of the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee release and is one (1) of 297 cards that are present out of the 396 making up a complete checklist. With the overall condition range found to be in the range of G to VG for its effort with many of the cards showing wear to their edges and corners that is worth mentioning for accuracy, among the includes key cards are those of 1-Goal Leaders (VG to VG-EX - slight corner wear), 70-Potvin (GOOD - off-center and corner wear), 81-Jets Logo Checklist (VG to VG-EX - unmarked and light corner wear), 100-Trottier (FR to G - creased), 131-Checklist (VG to VG-EX - 90-10 centering), 150-Dryden (PR - large crease), 160-Dionne (VG to VG-EX - ding at top left corner), 163-Whalers Logo Checklist (VG to VG-EX - unmarked and light corner wear), 175-Howe (FR to G - corner and bottom border wear), 185-Howe (VG to VG-EX - ding at top left corner), 200-Lafleur (G to VG - large ding at bottom right), 230-Bossy (G to VG - 2nd year card - small crease at top border), 237-Checklist (VG to VG-EX - unmarked and light corner wear) and 346-Checklist (VG-EX to EX - unmarked). Also including a group of approximately 240+ extra cards that are found to be in roughly the same condition as those making up the partial set listed above, the group includes duplicates and some of the stars present as found to be in a bit of a better condition than others.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by ACA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
