Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Disrupting the Soviets string of continuous gold medal wins at the IIHF World Championships three times between 1963 and 1983, Czechoslovakia was the only nation to usurp the Russians dominance, with gold medals won in 1972, 1976 and 1977. We present a 1977 IIHF World Championship gold medal. Measuring 2 3/4" in diameter with the original blue and yellow ribbon attached and "1977" to the bail, "World Championships" appears in raised letters circling the perimeter on the obverse along with two generic players. Featuring a painted globe IIHF logo with crossed hockey sticks on the reverse, it is encompassed by "International Ice Hockey Federation" in matching style raised letters. The medal displays beautifully and remains in near mint condition, with just a few tiny surface blemishes to the bottom on the obverse.
