Georges Huel, designer of the Montréal Olympic Symbol and COJO Director General of
Graphics and Design (The Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXI Olympiad, Montréal
1976) wanted to create one single symbol for Canada’s first Olympic Games — rather than
having two symbols separately representing both the Games and the official Olympic rings. His
resulting symbol successfully manages to embody a number of important references: the
Olympic rings, the ‘M’ nodding to Montréal but also symbolic of the podium on which the three
medallists stand, the stadium track in the centre of the logo and the red from the Canadian flag.
The poster design utilizes the consistent typographic header employed in many of the thematic
posters, with a large white official symbol sitting proudly in the majority of the red sheet
underneath. A version of this poster was also produced as a reversed alternative (white
background).
Note: please note that the magnets used in the pictures are for documentation reasons. There
are no holes in this original print.

visited Olympic sites in Munich and selected twenty-one color transparencies from among some
200,000 photos. Each photo had to be suitable for enlargement and reproduction, show readily

The poster for the International Youth Camp depicts a common symbol of youth in the 1970s: a
jean jacket covered in buttons and adorned with personal touches such as flowers. The buttons
symbolize (among other things) love, equality of the sexes, a return to nature, the search for
spiritual values, personal harmony, and the need for brotherhood.

Commissioned by COJO (Olympic Games Organizing Committee) as one in a series of posters
promoting the 1976 games. It uses the familiar silver and rainbow band colour scheme as a
backdrop for technical elevations of the centrepiece of the games’ official infrastructure —
French architect Roger Taillibert’s Olympic Stadium. Nicknamed ‘The Big O’ (and, less kindly,
‘The Big Owe’) the stadium was not finally completed until long after the Games had finished,
and is widely considered both an icon of the city and a huge white elephant (that in 2018 still
lacks a main tenant). It remains the largest stadium by seating capacity in Canada, and the
tower (completed in 1987) is the world’s tallest inclined structure.

The Arts and Culture program is organized by the Olympic Organizing Committee of
Montreal 1976 (COJO). Its goal was to create a Canadian festival at which athletes and
workers participated as well as visitors to the Games. Through this approach, they hoped
integrating it into the Games, rather than existing as a side attraction to the program
sporty.
The program adopted an explosive stylized sheaf of wheat motif in a sketch of colors
» (designed by Raymond Bellemare and Pierre-Yves Pelletier) to represent the festival, and was
used in marketing and communications materials, in conjunction with tapes
rainbow from the official COJO color palette. Purple invents folk dance;
red, theater; orange, opera and operetta; yellow, music; green and figurative arts; blue,
entertainment; and lavender, ballet and modern dance. While related communications
sports use these strips in a straight formation, or sometimes in diagonal chevrons, the flap
Arts and culture adopted a more expressive interpretation, while maintaining a link with
the more complete identity approach.
This poster was produced, along with a number of other official designs before the
games to raise awareness and create a sense of anticipation at home and abroad.

The text reads: Games of the XXI Olympiad Montreal/Games of the XXI Olympiad
Montreal 1976
This series of posters, commissioned by the COJO, illustrated the twenty-one sports on the program
of the Games of the XXI Olympiad. Each was intended to communicate action and immediacy
of his sport. The Graphics and Design Department therefore preferred the techniques
photographs to drawings, where the results could have been colored by interpretation
personal of the artist.
In a search for authenticity and according to well-defined selection criteria, the
OCOG representatives visited the Olympic venues in Munich and selected
twenty-one color transparencies from some 200,000 photos. Each photo had to be able to
be enlarged and reproduced, show easily apparent movement not contrary to the
rules or special techniques of sports, and be as spectacular as possible.
