Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Marking the beginning of a new decade and a new era in the National Hockey League, with expansion and relocation of franchises prevalent throughout the entirety of the 1970s, O-Pee-Chee's hockey card releases remained a constant over that time, with the company's 1970-71 release featuring a checklist of 264 cards that included notable rookie offerings of players such as Bobby Clarke, Gilbert Perreault, Brad Park, Guy Lapointe, Darryl Sittler and Wayne Cashman. Offered here, we present this group of 110 cards from the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee hockey release that have been signed by the player pictured on the front. Paced by autographed examples of 55-Beliveau (EX-MT to NM), 72-Howell (G to VG - corner wear and surface dent), 110-Ullman (VG-EX to EX - completely off-center from top-to-bottom), 113-Armstrong (GOOD - creased), 151-Magnuson (VG to VG-EX - light wrinkle), 178-Tremblay (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 195-Clarke RC (VG-EX to EX - light corner wear), 210-Hall (x2 - both EX range - both with slight corner wear), 219-Keon (GOOD - crease), 222-Plante (VG to VG-EX - corner wear) and 249-Orr AR (VG-EX to EX - 70-30 centering and light corner wear), all of the cards just listed are signed in either blue or black ballpoint pen with the autographs legible and largely displaying well despite a couple that show varying degrees of fading from age which is especially apparent on the Plante example which has been signed in blue marker ink.
Also including a group of Hall of Fame inductees and/or deceased players that totals twenty-one (21) cards, those that are present are; Harry Howell, George Armstrong, Norm Ullman (double signed), Tony Esposito, Andy Bathgate, Glen Sather (signed on reverse), Glenn Hall (x2), Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Eddie Giacomin, Jean Beliveau, Bob Pulford, Johnny Bucyk, Serge Savard, Stan Mikita (light/weak marker ink signature), Keith Magnuson (x2), John Ferguson (x2) and Pit Martin. Once again, the autograph condition story is largely the same as stated above with the cards in the overall grade ranges of G to VG and VG to VG-EX for the most part with a couple possibly a bit better or a bit worse. Finally, the rest of the lot presents in the same condition ranges of G to VG and VG to VG-EX for their efforts as well with some duplicates included and some cards presenting a bit better or a bit worse. Please note, the JSA Auction LOA that accompanies the group is ONLY for the first twelve (12) cards listed above.
