Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The most esteemed card of the fabled 1952 Topps baseball release, the most iconic baseball card set of all-time, the 1952 Topps baseball card set laid the foundation for what would become the modern trading card. In addition to the larger checklist, the design of the cards themselves featured full team logos, colorized black-and-white photography and, most interestingly, a facsimile signature of the player taken directly from their player contract with Topps. Offered here, we present this copy of card #311, the example of a then young Yankees sensation by the name of Mickey Mantle. Obviously well known to hobbyists, this copy of card #311, picturing Mantle over the front with bat in hand/over his shoulder and Yankees cap on this head, is the "Type-2" variation as the end of ‘e’ in “Mantle” does not curve upward, there is a missing black border at the bottom of the Yankees logo, there is a jagged border around the top of the star-box above his name and on the back of the card, the stitches of the baseball that the "311" is in point left. Having just been freshly graded by PSA and receiving a mark of PR 1 for its effort, the card, still showing with colour that is quite appealing, sports an image that is slightly off-center from right-to-left, is missing the bottom left corner, shows corner, edge and surface wear and/or rounding and various creases that are largely concentrated to the left side of the card. Overall still an attractive card in the eyes of this writer, "The Mick" remains one of baseball's most loved and most famous legends making this copy of this famed card deserving of considerable consideration.
