Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Spanning three decades is this splendid Wheaties collection, with a set of seldom-seen hockey instructional flip books among the highlights; the ten little 1958-59 books surviving in impressive near mint condition. Maurice Richard and the '62-63 Canadiens, all pictured in postcard-size photos, also help youngsters to play better hockey in a 24-page (VG) booklet measuring 7-1/4" by 10-1/4", accompanied by an ad with clipped-off order form. Other scarcities include three hockey cards from the '62-63 Great Moments in Canadian Sport series, with that of Frank Mahovlich graded EX/NM 6 by SGC. Card #1 featuring Bill Barilko is EX, with 19-Trail Wins World Title at VG. A likeness to the #16 Geoffrion card is cut from a box, while an ad for the promotion is at the bottom of a Joe Palooka comic. American Wheaties are represented by two similar yet different box panels featuring the Rangers' Lynn Patrick, with more details on our website. A champion "Breakfast of Champions" collection!
The "Champs" of the USA panels which appeared on the backs of Wheaties boxes in 1940 include three different athletes, with Lynn Patrick the only hockey player in the set of 27 stamp-like illustrations, accompanied by a write-up on each star. Yankee pitcher Red Ruffing joins Patrick on both panels here, with manager Leo Durocher on one (crease-free example) and pitcher Bob Feller on the (creased) other, the latter still with promotion details appearing below.
