Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
The first of many promotions by the company throughout the following decades, Quaker Oats began issuing hockey photo cards of Montreal and Toronto players during the 1938-39 NHL season in conjunction with the “Maple Leaf Bantam Hockey Club” memberships. Offered here via this lot that includes 26 of the 30 photos that make up a complete set, the near-complete grouping sees each photo printed on heavy cardstock that measures roughly 6 ¼” x 7 3/8”. All featuring an attractive border along with a black and white image of the depicted player, the set is missing only those of Toe Blake and Paul Drouin for completion. Including a good bunch of high-grade key offerings such as those picturing Turk Broda (EX-MT - white back - slight corner wear), Busher Jackson (EX to EX-MT - beige back - top left corner ding), Syl Apps (EX-MT to NM - beige back), Red Horner (EX-MT - beige back), Gordon Drillon (VG-EX to EX - white back - black border staining) and Babe Siebert (POOR - beige back - staple holes, creased, writing on the reverse as well as staining to the top right corner). For the rest of the group, the contingent of eleven (11) Maple Leafs is found to be in overall EX to EX-MT condition throughout for the most part, with the likes of Buzz Boll, Reg Hamilton, Bingo Kampman, Bob Davidson, Nick Metz and George Parsons being white back and the photo cards of Murph Chamberlain, James Fowler, Pep Kelly, Bill Thoms and Foster Hewitt sporting a beige coloured reverse. For the photo cards sporting images of players from the Montreal Canadiens over the front, profiling names like Walter Buswell, Herb Cain, Wilf Cude, Stew Evans, Johnny Gagnon, Robert Gracie, Paul Haynes, Rod Lorrain, George Mantha, James Ward and Cy Wentworth, all are beige back offerings that are technically in a low-grade condition due to there being the writing of "Claude Goyette" over both the fronts and reverses of all the included examples along with pinholes. Additionally, an original paper mailing envelope that the photos were sent in to recipients from The Quaker Oats Company of Peterborough, Ontario is also included, presenting in good condition with expected handling/age wear and creasing while free from major rips and tears and retaining good condition graphics and postage stamps.
