Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Perhaps the most beautiful hockey card set ever released and the sophomore issue to Imperial Tobacco’s landmark C56 hockey card release and highlighted by the coveted rookie card of the legendary Georges Vezina, the card serves as one of the hobby’s most cherished cardboard treasures to this day. Offered here in complete form glory, is this assembly of Imperial Tobacco's C55 1911-12 hockey card release. Paced by a group of six (6) cards that have recently been returned from grading at PSA, included are the examples of #38 Georges Vezina RC (PSA VG+ 3.5), #20 Fred Taylor (PSA NM 7 - POP-9 second highest graded - bested by only three PSA NM-MT 8's), #31 Arthur Ross (PSA EX 5 - POP-17 bettered by only 37 other examples), #27 Walter Smaill RC ("Hand on Hip" variation - PSA EX-MT 6 - POP-4 bettered by only three other examples, two PSA NM 7's and one PSA NM-MT 8), #35 Ernest Russell (PSA EX 5 - POP-29 bettered by only 35 other examples) and #41 Didier Pitre (PSA EX-MT 6 - POP-17 bettered by only nine other examples). All housed in fresh PSA holders that are found in overall excellent condition, the rest of the assembly includes the key cards of 1-Moran (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear and a small ding to the top border), 2-Hall RC (PR to F - large, deep crease through the card), 4-Malone RC (FR to G - off-center, tiny crease at the bottom left, small crease at top right), 11-Walsh (GOOD - stain at top left corner and a hairline crease at the right border - stain at top left corner), 15-Stuart (GOOD - completely off-center, slight water stain and a hairline crease at the left side), 16-Leseur (FR to G - crease at bottom left and surface scratches over his head), 17-Darragh RC (VG to VG-EX - slightly off-center and light corner wear), 24-O. Cleghorn RC (GOOD - print flaw at the top left and a tiny scuff on the back at the top right that is a missing piece), 28-Johnson (GOOD - completely off-center and tiny crease at the top left on the reverse), 29-Marshall (G to VG - light scuff on the reverse and light corner wear), 30-Hyland (G to VG - off-center, bottom border chipping and wear to the top right corner), 32-Hern (GOOD - hairline creases at the bottom right corner and border), 33-Roberts ("AUTHENTIC" - missing the top left corner), 36-Gardiner RC (FR to G - multiple hairline creases), 42-Lalonde (PR to F - worn and creases plus off-center) and 45-Laviolette (G to VG - light corner wear and wear/dirtiness to the left border). For the balance of the set, the examples of 5-Oatman RC, 7-Mallen RC, 22-Gilmour RC and 37-Bernier are seen as being around VG-EX to EX, the examples of 3-Holden, 9-Lake, 10-Kerr RC, 26-Ronan RC, 43-Payan RC and 44-Poulin RC are around VG to VG-EX, the examples of 12-Shore RC, 13-Currie RC, 18-Vair RC, 21-Lindsay RC and 25-O. Cleghorn RC are around G to VG, the examples of 8-MacDonald RC, 14-Ridpath, 23-Rowe RC and 40-Power RC are seen as being FR to G, the card of 19-Smith RC is in the scope of PR to F and finally, those of 6-Dunderdale, 34-Glass and 39-Dallaire RC are in the vicinity of "AUTHENTIC". Also including extra cards of 5-Oatman (VG to VG-EX), 30-Hyland ("AUTHENTIC") and 42-Lalonde (PR to FR), the set presents as an overall appealing assembly worthy of any esteemed vintage collection/portfolio!
