Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
A who’s who of early hockey stars, more than half (20) who later were enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, appeared in the very first hockey card set shortly after the formation of the National Hockey Association, with an opportunity to score an encapsulated near set always garnering immeasurable interest among collectors. We’ll lead with three of the set’s kingpins, depicted in their beauty Renfrew Creamery Kings turtleneck sweaters and graded VG-EX 4 (the dominant grade here) by PSA; #s 1-Frank Patrick, 26-Lester Patrick and 36-Newsy Lalonde. One of two Art Ross cards, #12 reaches the EX 5 mark, while #8 is slabbed GOOD 2. A Cyclone Taylor card is required to complete the ensemble, led condition-wise by EX-MT 6 examples of 4-Barney Holden and 33-Jack Marshall, with 2-Percy LeSueur receiving the same assessment but with an (OC) qualifier. At EX 5 are 7-Walsh, 24-Poulin, 27-Lake, 29-Toms and 35-Marshall, as well as 9-Campbell (MC) and 20-Russell (MC). The lone SGC-graded entry is also an EX 5 and features Jack Laviolette, the HOFer who assembled the very first edition of the Montreal Canadiens. In the stack of VG-EX 4 contributors are HOFers 10-Harry Hyland, 16-Joe Cattarinich, 22-Riley Hern, 23-Didier Pitre, and 30-Ernie Johnston (Johnson), along with 13-Decary, 18-Bawlf, 19-Jones, 31-Gaul, 32-McNamara and 34-Ridpath. Completing is a trio of VG 3s (3-Roberts, 11-Clark, 17-Stuart) and five at GOOD 2; 5-Glass, 6-Dey, 14-Dunderdale, 25-Bernier and 28-Moran (MC). The tantalizing assembly is an all-rookie card booty that is destined for a serious hobbyist – good luck with this desirable encapsulated treasure.
