Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A stirring and mesmerizing scrapbook jackpot is available here and offers riveting images of early hockey legends, along with others who helped write the history of the pre-NHL era. The charming cards were pasted (on both sides of scrapbook pages) over a century ago, with 1910-11 rookie cards of Art Ross (2), Paddy Moran, Newsy Lalonde, Cyclone Taylor and Frank and Lester Patrick appearing on the same page, with the other side starring Canadiens Laviolette, Pitre and Cattarinich, as well as Ottawa Senator legends Bruce Stuart, Marty Walsh, Percy LeSueur and Gordon Roberts, the latter four across the bottom row – talk about a Hall of Fame lineup! A heavy crease affects the Lalonde RC but otherwise, the relics display splendidly, their deep rich colors a treat to behold. The rest of the 36-card C56 set includes HOFers Tom Dunderdale, Jack Marshall (2), Ernie Johnston, Ernie Russell, Riley Hern and Harry Hyland and are on the opposite side of a page that is headlined by Georges Vezina’s 1911-12 C55 rookie card and including his teammates (Laviolette, Lalonde, Pitre and others). Other C55 entries include eight Quebec Bulldog players on the same page, with Joe Malone’s rookie (off-centered with rounded corners) and four other HOFers present, including Joe Hall (RC). Completing the fabulous find are a pair of cut pages with three cards on each side; Wanderers Hern, Ross, Hyland and Taylor highlight one, while the other includes teammates Johnson and Smaill (hand on hip) and then Senators Darragh, LeSueur and Stuart. A throw-in is a single C57 card; 4-Atchinson RC. From the fascinating dawn of the hockey card era, this stash offers multiple possibilities.
