Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A treaty signed and ratified by the United Kingdom and the United States in 1871 during the first premiership of William Gladstone and the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, the "Treaty of Washington" settled various disputes between the countries, including the Alabama Claims for damages to American shipping caused by British-built warships, as well as illegal fishing in Canadian waters and British civilian losses in the American Civil War. It inaugurated permanent peaceful relations between the United States and Canada, and also with the United Kingdom. Offered here, we offer this presentation photo of the British high commissioners to the 1871 Treaty of Washington that has been signed by six (6) including the first Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John Alexander Macdonald. Captured by famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, the image is studio inscribed by hand beneath the photo at lower left "M. B. Brady" while "127 Penn. Ave, Washin D.C." appears beneath the image at the lower right. Within the image itself, pictured from left-to-right are; Lord Tenterden, Sir Stafford Northcote, Sir John A. Macdonald, Earl de Grey & Ripon, Mountague Bernard and Sir Edward Thornton. Measuring slightly smaller than 16 1/2" x 13 1/2" for its effort, the mounted albumen photograph measures out to full dimensions of roughly 22 1/2" x 19 3/4" and is displayed upon a cream coloured matte. Sporting edge and corner wear as well as liquid staining over the right side of the matte, light staining/foxing is also seen throughout the rest of the matte which is heaviest over the reverse and at the left edge on the front. Also displaying four (4) soft corners and a missing piece at the top right as well as some small tears all the way around, all six (6) gentlemen pictured have signed over the bottom portion of the matte with elegant signatures that display without issue, including Canada's first leader. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
